Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm of Zehir is an expansion pack for Neverwinter Nights 2 developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Atari. The game is presumed to have been designated by the codename NX2 by its developers.
Storm of Zehir hearkens back to the days of the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale franchises by including full party customization, dungeon crawling, and free exploration of a non-linear game world via an Overland Map. The storyline foreshadows the events that will take place in the Forgotten Realms with the release of the Fourth Edition of Dungeons & Dragons in June 2008.

The World Map has been Updated and is now 3d, corresponding with a more nonlinear campaign. This world map uses the same engine as the "local map" used in the majority of the game, although the scale is different. Random encounters appear on the map, which the characters can either avoid (using skills such as Move Silently to delay the NPC reaction time) or engage. Upon engagement, a dialogue window appears, allowing the character to choose their reaction -- most hostile targets will merely have fight or flee, while more neutral targets will have more civilized options.
Players will use previously "useless" skills such as Spot and Survival while on the world map to avoid ambushes and find special events, similar to the Fallout series of games. Examples given are of a party with a character with a high listen discovering a hissing box in the middle of nowhere, or a party with a high disable device discovering a trap, that they can then disable and resell the components.
Players will create the primary 4 members of the party, although NPCs, called cohorts, may also join, and the character can swap out the 4 members of the party for other player-created characters at any tavern. This is similar to a previous game by Black Isle Studios, Icewind Dale. In addition, intra-party dynamics have been improved: The NPC dialogue system has been updated, allowing the player to change who is talking with NPCs on the fly, allowing players to switch to characters with different skills, races, or classes to exploit NPC reactions to this. In addition, new benefits including feats are available that affect party play.
In the aftermath of the defeat of the King of Shadows, the Sword Coast is in the midst of an uneasy economic recovery. Trade syndicates have sprung up to exploit the post-war confusion for their own ends. The players’ party will wade into this uncertain environment; in order to increase their own fortunes, they can either ally with a syndicate to create a trade empire, or cut their own path through Faerûn by preying upon caravans and selling the goods on the black market. As they attempt to extend their influence, players will become aware of a new faction working behind the scenes: the evil, shapeshifting, serpentine Yuan-ti.
The game takes place at the same time, chronologically, as Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, but is otherwise unrelated to that expansion. Returning from the backstory of the Forgotten Realms, Volothamp "Volo" Geddarm plays a key part in the story. Banned from his homeland for publishing a story, Volo and the player's party land on an island full of the anthromorphic snake-like Yuan-ti. These Yuan-ti worship Zehir, an evil god introduced in the 4th Edition of Dungeons and Dragons.
Another major component of the story is the mysterious Sa'Sani, an owner of a Merchant company. The player's party joins with this company, but how successful her company is, as well as how closely related the player is to it, is up to the player.
